If you want to stay in Germany for an extended time you will need a visa.
Work Visa
Once you find a job you can apply for a work visa. You have to bring your proof of bank funds, insurance proof, and a contract that you recieve from the job. Usually you have to find a job that can be filled by no other German before you will be allowed to take the job. This can make things frustrating as you have to wait for the Visa to be cleared before they decide that you can take the job. This can take between 1 and 3 months.

Residency Visa
An option to extend your stay is to get a residency visa. Registering your stay is done at Bürgeramt. The Ausländerbehörde (foreigners office) is the place where you need to apply for a residency permit after you registered your stay at Bürgeramt. It is important that you register your stay at Bürgeramt as soon as possible after your arrival in Tuebingen. For your residency permit the Ausländerbehörde will want proof that you can support yourself, usually a minimum income of 400 - 500 EUR per month. If you do not have these funds, a friend or their parents should be able to provide you with a “Verpflichtungserklärung”. (”Verpflichtungserklärung” means a legally binding declaration of liability for the length of your stay in Germany.) This will get you your residency permit.
Study Visa
Once admitted to a German University, you will be allowed to apply for a Study Visa. With this visa you are also allowed to work 90 full days per year or 180 half days, meaning 40 hours per week for 90 days or 20 per week for 180 days.
