Getting Travel Insurance was one of the first things I did before flying over to Germany. In Germany it is a law that you have to have health insurance. If you try to register yourself in Germany they will make sure that you have health insurance before they process any papers.
Currently I use Mulitnational Underwriters Insurance. This insurance costs me $40 per month, but provides only basic health care. This covers any traveling I do throughout Europe, but in the US I do not recieve any coverage. The best thing about this insurance is that I am able to pay monthly instead of paying everything in advance.
Eglobal health is another provider of international health insurance. They have two types of coverage.
1.) Travel Medical Insurance “This protects primarily your health when traveling abroad. Short to intermediate term plans go from 5 days to one year or more and generally cover only illness, accident & emergencies”
2.)International Major Medical Insurance “This is designed for longer term travelers or expatriates / expat citizens who live abroad.”
Still don’t want to pay for health insurance?
It is still possible to stay in Germany without any insurance. Either make an insurance card and change the validities dates. Make sure the card is in English and they will usually just believe you when you say that you have insurance.
The National German Health Coverage
According to How to Germany:
“Most German residents are members of the government health system (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung or GKV). If your gross annual salary is below 47,700 Euros per year or 3,975 Euros per month, membership in the GKV is mandatory. The total cost of government health insurance is currently approx. 15% of your gross salary up to a maximum monthly income of 3,563 Euros. If you earn more than this amount your insurance premium remains constant. Your employer will normally pay slightly less than half of the monthly premium.”
