Food shopping in Germany is very competitive. Every town has at least two competing food chains. Large cities have a large number of options. Food ranges from premium to less known brands that are cheaper than all the others.
Cheapest and Smallest Stores
Lidl - This food store is small, but it has a good selection. One thing they have here that other stores don’t have is Mexican Pizzas, Non flavored Tortilla Chips, and Salsa. Most of the items here are cheaper than other supermarkets.
Aldis - By far one of the cheapest shops. There number one goal is to provide quality products at a low price. They have a lot of off branded product that taste close to the original, but at a much lower price.
Penny Markt - A good place to buy fresh bread. They have rolls for 20 cents baked daily.
Plus - Yet another small food store that offers lesser known brands and low prices.
Stores with Everything
Kaufland - They sell tvs, clothes, and of course food. Inside they usually have a cheap shoe store, a haircutter and even a small Turkish restaurant. Kaufland branded products are usually low priced.
Marktkauf - A very large supermarket with a wide selection of electronics, dvds, beer, and food. I found meat to be much cheaper here than most places.
Rewe - A good selection of food, a bit more expensive than most places, but if you buy Ja branded products you will save on your food bill. Large Rewes also have a good selection of American and British products, including Maple Syrup.
Food Market
In the town center there is usually a fruit and vegetable market during the day. Here vendors will sell food a bit cheaper than in the store. Come at the end of the day before they close shop and they usually offer good deals and food that is about to expire.
Little Russia in Germany
There is one store that is not so prevelent in Germany, but does have a small presence throughout it. Mix Markt sells products from Russia including sweets, beer, meat, vegetables… Most of the prices here are much cheaper than other stores. I especially like the Russian icecream sold here. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I also wanted to mention that in my area, the Edeka (Aktiv) markt has a reasonable selection of ethnic foods, including salsa & the like. I’ve even seen tostada shells there! They’ve also got great produce and an awesome selection of very inexpensive pizzas.
