What is Doener anyway?

Doener stands can be found everywhere in Germany. The meat of a Doener is sliced from a rotating slab of meat that turns around in a circle next to a hot gas grill. The meat looks a little weird spinning around all day, maybe even unhealthy. A doener is on the contrary one of the healthiest fast food choices in Germany.

The Ingredients
It consists of the heated meat as well as salad. In the salad is lettuce, onions, cucumber, tomatoes and usually some red cabbage. All of this is served on a toasted flatbread.
A Good Doener?
Based on my experiences in Germany there are good Doeners and there are bad Doeners. A good Doener usually cost around 3 euros and a bad Doener cost less than that. Doener stands that make bad Doeners keep their prices low because simply otherwise people wouldn’t eat there.

History Behind it
After World War 2, Turks were invited to work in Germany. However, after the work was over, most Turks didn’t leave. What the brought with them was traditional Turkish food, that being the Doener. Many Turks opened up Doener shops and became quite successful with the new fast food option.
