Moving from a German Apartment, Ausziehen

By Nick | Aug 15, 2007

These are a few that should be completed before moving out of a room in Germany.

1. Paint the walls. The walls should be one color and clean.
2. Clean the mirrors, windows, and toilet with cleaner.
3. Wipe everything down, including any furniture that’s staying in the room.
4. Mop the floor very well.

A German Hausmeister (landlord) is usually very critical of the room’s appearance. Any single spot of dirt or an unclean window and they will make you clean it up. When I tried to move out of a room in Bonn, Germany the Hausmeister gave me a whole set of cleaning supplies and told me to clean my room once more. I even had to sweep the area outside my room. If it is not clean, then you may lose your deposit, which is usually equivalent to one month’s rent.
