Using a Mobile Phone in Germany, Phone Rates

By Nick | Aug 17, 2007

Using a Mobile Phone in Germany is much more expensive than most parts of the world. Using a prepaid card for a T-Mobile phone is costing me 20 euro cents per minute. The cost of calling someone adds up quick. Most phone calls therefore are straight and to the point. In Germany, Mobile phones are called Handys.

Calling alternatives
SMS – Sending an SMS is a much cheaper alternative. A normal SMS message costs only 8 cents per message depending on the provider.
Call and Hangup – I use the call and hangup to let a phone ring once to let someone know I am comming without actually using any of my minutes.

Call from the Internet – Using Just Voip costs only 8 cents per minute for computer to German Mobile calls. Read my Post Here.

Why so expensive?
When you call someone, you pay for the entire call while they don’t pay anything. One benefit to this is, that even if you don’t have any minutes on your cell phone, you are still reachable at all times.

German Mobile Companies
Ja Mobile – This is one of the cheapest options. Calls are only 14 cents per minute and an SMS message cost as little as 8 cents. Coverage of Ja phones is not that great at the moment.
T-Mobile – This company has worldwide coverage. The phone works in trains and sometimes even in the countryside.
Vodaphone – A popular cellphone provider. They offer monthly plans at as little as 10 euros per month for 50 minutes of calling.
O2 – Not as popular as most cell phone companies, but getting overall more and more prevelant in Germany.
