There are so many different types of beer in Germany that its hard to know what to expect before drinking it. The following German Beer Guide lists the main types of beer in germany and gives a short explanation to what kind of beer it is.

Altbier (old beer) – left sitting longer, fermented and cold lagered

Berliner Weisse (Berlin wheat beer) – served with added syrup, but try it without

Bock (strong lager) – over 6.4% alcohol content

Dortmunder Export – clear and pale golden

Dunkel (dark beers) - darker roasted malt, distinctive taste

Gose (a distinctive Leipzig style)- fermented wheat beer

Hefeweizen (Bavarian wheat beer) – wheat with a distinct orange yellow color

Kristallweizen (filtered Bavarian wheat beer)

Kölsch (Koelsch) (a very pale ale from Cologne/Köln)

Märzen (Bavarian “March Beer” — the original Oktoberfest beer)

Münchner Helles (Munich light lager)

Pils (AKA Pilsner or Pilsener)

Sticke (strong altbier)

Rauchbier (smoke beer) – smoke flavors the beer during fermentation
