The cost of living in Germany is much higher than you think. Simple services like train travel like a one way ticket a few stops costs 2.20 Euro. Everytime you go to the bathroom in a public place, expect to give at least a 20 cent tip to the bathroom cleaner. These little costs will add up quickly.
It’s Where You Live That Counts
Keep in mind that the cost of living in Germany is also dependent on where you live in Germany. East Germany is relatively cheaper than the booming regions. A city like Munich is known for being the highest cost of living in Germany. Berlin, the largest city in Germany, has a much lower cost of living. Housing in Berlin is abundent, making it easy to find and affordable.
My Cost of Living in Germany
After having lived and Germany and calculating my own cost of living, I’ve been able to manage on as low as 400 Euros per month. This is by living in a large Flat with 6 people (only 200 Euros monthlyE), Shopping at Aldis (30 Euros Weekly), and buy riding a bike. To reduce my transportation costs, I have also purchased a German Bahn Card 50 (saves half price on all train tickets.)
Keep in mind that the cost of living in Germany can be low if you want it to be. Be willing to drink less in the Biergarten and you will save that 3.10 Euro (it adds up quickly).
