Being Abroad can be a great experience, but during that time homesickness can set in and really make it difficult to enjoy the entire experience. During my times abroad, I’ve had the feeling of life going up and down almost like on a rollercoaster. Some days are great, while at other times I’ve felt homesickness from being abroad.
A Homesick Rollercoaster
According to UWSP.org:
“Abroad you’ll experience ups and downs. Much will excite you — new friends, sights, experiences. But homesickness is still a fact of life. You’ll miss you family, your boy-or-girlfriend, your dog, your favorite hangout, and your preferred junk food. It’s perfectly natural — and regardless of how they show it, you can bet that others in your group are undergoing the same thing. Talk with peers and your leaders if you are really down. Sometimes homesickness causes people to stick even closer to their group, losing valuable chances to meet people and see new things.”
Fortunately there are ways to connect yourself with back home. The internet offers a lot of possibilities to watch TV from America, as well as other countries.
Return Syndrome
What about when its time to come back home? Then it can be hard to say goodbye to your new friends and other way of life. You have to leave all your new friends behind.
UWSP.org: “When it’s finally time to wave good-bye to your host city, it’s hard to leave. You don’t have time to anticipate a real problem: it’s called the return syndrome. The first day or two at home can be marvelous but after that you’ll wonder why you ever wanted to be back.”
How to fight the return syndrome? Remember since being abroad you are a changed person and you can use your new life experience to enhance your old life. You can also go back for a visit.
