Opening a Bank Account in Germany

By Nick | Oct 4, 2007

Opening a Bank is not as difficult as it sounds. Once you have a place to stay and have registered with the city, you can easily open a bank account.

Using Deutsche Bank
I would recommend using this bank. They have an agreement with banks worldwide in which you can use their partner banks to withdraw money with no fees. This includes Bank of America in the USA. This means you can withdraw money at these other banks with the best exchange rate and no fees.

Save money when you are a student
When I signed up wth the Deutsche Bank, I signed up with their student account. With the student account there are no fees involved. I also didn’t need to deposit anymore into my account.

Why open an account?
One thing you will notice in Germany is that not many places accept credit cards. To use a card, you need to use an EC card. You will get this when you sign up for an account.
