Searching for a job in Germany is tough, whether you are a German or not. I can’t say this situation is related to Germany specifically, yet at the moment being, those applying for Jobs in Germany may find it difficult if they aren’t in some way specialized.
Get a Degree
From personal experience, I would not recommend looking for that perfect job in Germany if you don’t have at least a degree. Not anyone can just take a job in Germany, you need exact reasons why you are more qualified than anyone else. There is what is called preferential treatment.
When a job offer is given, priority is given:
1. First to German citizens
2. Then to EU citizens
3. Next to Those in Exile.
4. Any other third party (Including Americans)
Just think you start at the bottom of the list if you are American. This means you have to prove why you are a better candidate over the other 3 groups.
Employment in Germany: The Permit
All persons who wish to seek gainful employment in Germany are required to obtain a residence permit in the form of a visa. The residence permit (”Aufenthaltserlaubnis”) only allows you to take up gainful employment (employee or self-employment) if the residence permit expressly entitles you to do this. Alternatively they can apply for a residence permit prior to entry at the German Embassy in Washington or at a German Consulate (currently located in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York or San Francisco).
