One great way to further your work experience and get a chance for an extended stay in Germany is by getting and internship.
What to keep in mind
Usually when applying for an internship in Germany, you need to be enrolled. If you have graduated, an idea might be to just enroll in school again, if not just to get an internship. There are also often internships you can do even if you have graduated even though they are harder to come by. Don’t expect to earn much in your internship if anything. Most students earn as little as 400 euros a month from working full time and even they can be considered lucky that they are receiving any pay at all.
Places to get an internship
CDSintl.org – They offer a paid program for getting an internship. According to the website, “This program provides work authorization for Germany for enrolled students at, or recent graduates (within 3 months of graduation) from U.S. universities and colleges. Enrolled students from Canada and non-U.S. students attending accredited U.S. colleges and universities are also eligible to apply. Participants find their own host companies and negotiate the terms of employment. Programs start individually at the beginning of each month. Apply at least 6 weeks prior to desired start date.” They charge a $250 program fee.
JobWorld.de/. Type in the keyword internship. I’ve been able to find both graduate internships and internships you can do while studying.
