If you have ridden on the German Train System, you probably have already learned one thing, it can be expensive. Just traveling two hours can cost up to 45 euros one way. Some even say that it might be cheaper just to drive.
Avoid the high cost of German Rail Tickets
If you travel enough, it just might be worth to get a Bahncard 50. This ticket, which costs 110 euros for students and 220 euros for non students gives you half off all train tickets, both slow and fast tickets. The card last for an entire year. If you plan to stay in Germany more than a month, this card can quickly pay for itself. On the downside, if you planning to travel only a few stops, usually you can not use the Bahncard 50. As I’ve tried to use it to travel to a destination 15 minutes away, the German Rails considers this not valid for discount. Also, you will not save on already specially priced tickets like the weekend ticket.
The Weekend Ticket
Traveling on the weekend is cheaper in Germany. Their is a pass called the schoenewochende ticket which, for 28 euros you can travel anywhere in Germany for a whole day with up to 4 other companions. You have to take slow trains, but this will end up being much cheaper. Look out for tag alongs, Germans who will notice that you have this weekend ticket and try to join in if you don’t total 5 people. I’ve had this happen to me more than one. Usually its ok, and you already bought the ticket, so why not help someone out?
