Copyright Infringement in Germany

By Nick | Jan 3, 2008

Somehow I always believe that the Copyright Infringement rules in Germany would somehow be less severe in Germany than the United States, yet it is on my latest trip here, that I’ve had to be more cautious than ever with what I download.

New German Copyright Infringement Laws
Now those in Germany can be sued just for downloading music. Record labels are now allowed to see detailed information about the users who download the music including their address. Even just one song might end up getting you sued. As I’ve noticed in the United States, it seems to be the file sharers who end up getting sued, not the downloaders.

How to Avoid Breaking Laws
Don’t download anything from any illegal downloading sites. Especially Bit Torrents and Emule. Use legal downloading sites like ClickforNick’s Legal MP3 Blog. When watching illegal files, playing illegal songs, make sure to disconnect from the Internet. Many Germans that I know now fear that the Government is now taping into their computers in order to figure out what they are doing.
