Commercialism in Germany, or is it that small business reigns supreme in Germany?

Though the food industry in Germany has adopted commercialism and rather than mom and pop shops opening their own stores in Germany, a few big chains reign supreme.  Might I mention Aldi and Plus supermarkets with the underlying message “our products are cheap!”.

Clothing, it’s also adopted commercialism.  Germany has the very large Kaufhof  and Karstadt chains that every somewhat larger city in Germany has.  You’ve also got the retail clothes stores like New Yorker, Esprit, and of course Mango.

Eating out seems to be a more traditional venue with most cities having their own restaurants unlike the USA where you will find the same restaurants in almost every city.  Of course Germany does have McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, and in some cities you’ll even find a Joey’s Pizza.

Small traditional stores is one aspect you have to give Germany credit for.  In every inner city, you’ll find enough small  stores to delight you.  Every inner city still seems to have it’s traditional German Clock Makers, trinket makers, as well as many other nice little gifts.
