How to Save Money in Germany

By admin | Mar 13, 2008

After being in Germany 4 times, I’m still not sure I can answer the question “how to save money in Germany”.  With the rapidly increasing Euro and the prices in Germany which don’t seem to drop, the ability to save money in Germany can be hard.

Save Money: Buy the Ja Brand or Store Brand
As you probably know, the store brand is always the cheapest.  Fortunately store brands cost much less than any other brand.  Yet, the quality is better than those American stores brands from what I can remember.

Save Money: Walking does you good
Remember, Germany is a small place.  You can walk most cities on foot without taking the bus or the tram.  However, I can’t say this is always the norm.  Places like Munich are probably impossible to walk entirely by foot (I tried it) quite difficult!

Save Money: Eat a Doener
Sounds strange, but  I’ve noticed is that Doener is probably the cheapest and most filling food in Germany.  Expect to pay around 2to 3 euros for a Doener.  But, make sure to avoid any Doener that is near it’s end.  (I spent 2 days sick).

Get a Bank of America Bank Account
Bank of America seems to offer the best exchange rates.  Whenever I pull money out of my account of Bank of America at a Deutsche Bank, not only do I not pay any fees, but I get the best exchange rate of the day.

Honestly, it is quite difficult to save money in Germany.  The most that I can recommend it avoid eating out directly in city centers and do a price comparison.
