Watch German Movies and Improve Your German

By admin | Mar 25, 2008

Watching German movies are a great way to improve your German and get a glimpe of German history. You might have even noticed that most German movies have a lot to do with world war 2. The period from World War 2 until the time of the reunification of Germany has had a strong presence in most German movies. Take Nowhere in Africa for example where a family moves to Africa in order to escape the evil Nazi regime. Also Rosenstrasse deals with Jews married to Germans in Berlin held captive.

*Hint: Try watching German movies with the subtitles in German if you have trouble understanding.

I’ve watched the following German movies and would highly recommend them:
# Downfall (2005) Oliver Hirschgbiegel
Der Untergang
# Europa, Europa (1991) Agnieszka Holland
Hitlerjunge Salomon
# Faraway, So Close (1993) Wim Wenders
In weiter Ferne, so nah
Good-Bye Lenin! (2003) Wolfgang Becker
# Miracle of Bern, The* (2003)
Das Wunder von Bern was Germany’s 1954 soccer win.
