Want to learn the German language?  I’ve spent years working with the German language, trying to learn the German Language by heart and fluently.  Over the years I’ve discovered what ways work best, and simply what took forever when learning the German Language.

Should I Learn German on My Own?
You might have seen the many learn German at home books.  This was my first step from the beginning.  But, after months of use, I just didn’t seem to get anywhere use this learn on your own books.   Though it will help you get started, trying to learn a new language on your own can be quite difficult.

Learning German in a University or Community College
This method is optimal for those who really want to start to learn. Studying in a place of instruction forces you to learn.   An instructor will keep you on tract and make sure that you are pronouncing the German Language properly.  Plus, tests will make sure you are keeping pace.

Learning German In Germany
Overall if you really want to learn the German Language, go to Germany to do it.  Learning German in Germany simply goes much faster since you are exposed to the language on a daily basis.  This option doesn’t have to be expensive either.  I’d recommend attending a Volkhochschule (http://www.vhs.de/).  Here courses cost a relatively low fee of 8 euros per instruction hour.  Of course you’ll need to find your accommodation, but this can be easily done via wggesucht.de.

  1. I totally agree - if you want to learn German it is best to go to Germany! In my experience, books and learning in a non-German speaking country will only really help you learn the basics and the theory. Having studied second and third languages, i firmly believe that start to use the language proficiently you really need to do some kind of in country in immersion. I spent several years struggling with Spanish and honestly felt like I accomplished as more in 6weeks during my immersion course than I had over a whole 2 years. Good advice!

  2. Going to Germany is not an option for most people. I would guess 90% of us can’t just “go to Germany” because we want to learn the language.

Classes likely are the best way to learn a language–either at a local school (Community College, University, High School, etc.) or on your own/with others who are learning.

Pmisleur and other German Language Instruction companies do make products with audio–or audio only. Sure, learning may take longer this way, but it allows you to learn without having to go to a class–and still get punctuation right.

    Just a few thoughts…
