I recently started thinking about some German Protests I’ve witnessed in Germany. From an outsiders perspective, one particular protest was quite strange.
During the protest it seemed as if to be guided by some kind of rules. No one really screamed anything out.
As the parade moved through Berlin everyone followed a big truck moving slowly and blasting techno music. Along with some protesters drinking beer, I had to wonder if this was a protest or a techno festival?
The difference I’ve noticed is that protests in Germany seem to be a lot more organized and cleared with the city before any single person protests. It’s not like in the US where I’ve seen people protesting whenever they want, wherever they want. Of course it’s a freedom those in the US have and as I don’t know the rules I can’t say whether Germans can freely protest like they can in the US.
When it comes to the Iraq war, Germans have no problem protesting the war. But as the Germans have even written on signs “we had hitler, now you have yours” these messages seem a bit extreme. Of course talk to any Kurdish person and they’ll love you if you’re a US citizen. Talk to an Indian person and they love you, or go to China and they’ll thank you. However, as you go to Germany and Europe they have mixed feelings.
