History of Maultaschen

By admin | Jul 15, 2008

If you haven’t tried Maultaschen you are missing out, but we wouldn’t have had these delightful pasta pockets had history not had it’s course and lent came into play.

The rumor is that in Swabia (South Germany) monks invented the Maultaschen as a way to eat meat during lent. They believed that it would be undetectable since the meat was concealed in pasta.

The Maultaschen are similar to Italian ravioli, but often eaten with potatoes or cooked in a broth.

Where can you buy these outside of Germany?

As far as I know it’s not found much far out of Germany, it’s something that has to be home made.
