Transporting a Bike To Germany, Biking in Germany

By admin | Jan 15, 2009

I’ve been to Germany 5 times already and I’ve always wonder how much transporting a bike to Germany would actually cost.  When transporting a bike to Germany you normal have to pay extra fees that could amount up to $100 for each direction, since airline baggage limits you normally to a total of 62 inches H X W x L.  These fees can add up if you travel often to Germany.

Another place you’ll run into additional bike fees is taking the train in Germany.  Any bikes transported on board require you to pay an additional fee just for hauling that bike along.  In the end you might as well have bough a completely new bike in Germany, rather than haul yours along.

Using Folding Bikes in Germany
I recently purchased a folding bike to take to Germany, rather than a full size bike for a full reasons.

1. Folding bikes can be folded in half often making them small enough to fit in your luggage.
2. Folding bikes can be hidden in a carry bag, letting you avoid any train fees since your bike is not visible to any train conductors.
3. Many of these folding bikes weight as little as 25 pounds, making it possible to carry from destination to destination without any enormous strain.
4. Folding bikes can fit a full size adult.

Sure you might be thinking ok, so if I get a folding bike, I’m going to be stuck with 20 inch small tires that won’t work well.   Fortunately many of the mid range models, priced $300 and over often have full suspension and up to 9 gears, letting you ride your folding bike on multiple types of terrain.

I ended up purchasing this Downtube 8 speed full suspension bike for about $300 plus $20 shipping.

All that’s missing is a hard case for transporting the bike.
