Why would some Germans want the German wall reinstated? Many Germans have found that after the war the taxes have gotten to be very high. In fact it may be true that as many as one in seven Germans wouldn’t mind if their had not be a reunification. Many Germans point to the high taxes, the cost of supporting the east. Many easterners even feel that it was bad for them since now many have left eastern Germany and unemployment levels are very high.
As a recent Yahoo News article found “15 percent of the country’s 82 million long for the days when there were two Germanys. Some 16 percent pining for the Wall were westerners and 10 percent easterners.”
The reunification wasn’t easy for everyone in Germany and many found that bringing down the Berlin Wall was great to be able to travel more freely, but the burden of bring the east side back up to standards with the West wasn’t easy either.
