Europe has been implimenting more and more passport control, even in Germany. The times I’ve been passport controlled in Europe usually meant getting stopped and having my things searched. However, usually they don’t check your passport beyond identification purposes. In fact sometimes they don’t even look at your passport at all. The main purpose tof the standard passport controls seem to be against smuggling anything illegally. However, I’m sure United States Citizens get an easier time than say someone frmo China during passport control.
Other passport controls in Germany include arriving in the airrport from a non European country. When you fly to Germany from say the United States, you will need to show your passport. You will be questioned as to the nature of your visit. Usually the easiest response is just tourism.
When traveling between European Union Countries there usually isn’t any passport, control, just random searches as mentioned in the first paragraph.
