Buying a train ticket when you are in Germany is not difficult. In fact the processes for getting a ticket to ride the train is easier than you think. When you are in any train station look for red machines that say Fahrkarten. In these computers there is a language selection on the bottom that says languages. Switch to English and the process will be much easier for buying a ticket.

A few things to know about German trains
The RE stands for regional express. These trains are cheaper but take a long time. One of the options for buying a ticket is without ICE or EC. This will cost a lot less but take a lot more time, with a lot more train connections.

ICE stands for Inter City Express. These are the fastest trains in Germany and the most expensive. They are the nice white trains you’ll see. They only stop in major destinations and not all local train stations.

Schoenewochende ticket saves money on weekkend travel. If you travel with the so called Schoenewochende ticket (beautiful weekend pass) you can travel with up to 5 people anywhere in Germany using the slow RE trains for 35 euros. This is a great way to save money if you are in a group of people.
