What is a German Gruenkohlfahrt

By admin | Jan 21, 2010

This post describes a little bit about something called a “Gruenkohlfahrt”. Just what is a Gruenkohlfahrt? It’s kind of like a  cooking party where most northern Germans get together and eat some cooked kale.

Germans often like to have parties and trips with specific reasons.  Gruenkohlfahrt is for cooking kale, while there are other types of trips like the  Kaffeefahrten (cake and coffee) and Butterfahrten (toll-free goods) etc…

The way that a “Grünkohlfahrt” works is that you invite your closest friends for a winter walk.  Usually this takes place between November and February.  You found a route where you can toast schnapps (you need to bring schnapps).

The walk needs to end around dark and at the restaurant where you want to eat.  There needs to be kale, sausages, meats, potatoes all read when you arrive.  Plan for the walk to end at twilight in front of the house or restaurant at which you are going to eat. Make sure plenty of kale, sausage, meat and potatoes are ready when you arrive. At the end of the party you need to crown the king and queen of kale, since they will be in charge of hosting next year’s party.
