German License Plates on Cars in the USA

What is with German License plates in the USA appearing on German cars? Yes this is legal and since people owning a “euro” car like a Volkswagen tend to like Germany, they take it a step further by putting on an expired license from Germany on their car.

Most tend to use actual expires German plates, as I am planning to do to my own Volkswagen Golf.
